July 02. 2003 - A BIG (!) cloud down south | Comments/reports/log-sheets/audios to DK5YA

This was the first day since beginning of May that even 50 MHz was almost dead the whole day through in Europe. Except the very south-western part of Spain. In the afternoon a huge cloud formed in this area covering a very wide range. At 1600 UT 144MHz suddenly opened from EA8 to almost whole Spain. Perhaps some made the ''144 MHz Worked All EA8-award today :-)? Later this cloud was really huge cause EA8 and CN were working into IS0 and south-west France at the same time! And France was waiting for D44 but no Tropo to enhance Es-propagation from D44 to EA8 to F. MUF was high at times (> 200 MHz) cause QRB was quite short from CN to EA5 and EA6 and from EA6 to CT and there were several EA8 working with 1/4 wave sticks and 25 Watt in FM! Later CN was working into I and EA1 at the same time while F was endscale in EA8!!! And, surprise, CN was also worked in G while EA9 was into HB9 and heard shortly in DL. This happened when CT made I8 and IT9 plus 9H1. You guess thats it? Wrong, the cloud came back! At 20:06 CN, EA and EA9 were into F, HB9, I, LX and DL while CT made I8 again, last sigs app. 20:40 UT. There were still short openings from EA8 to EA1 and EA2 until midnight. This was a very big and strong opening when almost whole EA and CT was covered by this Es cloud!
Involved DXCC: CT, EA, EA6, EA8, EA9, CN, F, G, HB9, DL, LX, I, IT9, IS0, 9H1

After loosing the Es last monday, luck smilled to me yesterday. I was driving home when I noticed "RAI" on the RDS display the car radio. It was the signal to drive fast, hi.
The opening lasted until 1830z (or maybe more). At least until that time I could heard a 9H station calling around .300 without any takers. The signals were weak compared to other Es last month, and QSB was strong. Even so, it was a nice opening: 1 new DXCC and 3 new grids!

Another Es this evening. Now with EA8. The sporadic started with low signals, in fact, I thougth it could be tropo, but later signals were as strong as a good sporadic. All worked again with FT-817, 5 watts and turnstile antenna:

16:32 EB8BTV IL18QI 2161 Km.
16:41 EA8TJ IL18RI 2155 Km.
17:07 EA8AHH IL18UL 2127 Km.
17:21 CN8KD IM63KX 1066 Km.
17:46 CT1EPS IM57XC 969 Km.
Very weak and unstable signals from EA8 here, but heard signals from Canary Islands for more than one hour. Later worked CN and CT (only 969 Km away) so MUF was pretty high ! CN & CT were comming in only for about one minute each.

Today I started hearing EA8 stations to the South. First I thought it was Tropo, very usual with EA8 from my QTH, but when noticed the QSB and signals disappearing I realized it was ES. One hour later the opening was to the East. Countries worked: CN(1), EA6(1), EA8(2), I(10), IS0(1), IT9(1), F(2), 9H(2). Best DX IT9/IK0BZY (1905 Km), Shortest QRB EB6ADS (only 984 Km)

Working on my computer, this afternoon of July the 2nd, my TX receiving on 144.300, I heard an EA station calling and calling for a long time (my antenna was turned to the NE), so I didn't pay attention because I'm living near the Spanish border (EA2) and kept on working. But EA station still calling after an half of an hour and at 16:53, I stopped working and listen carefully. It was EA8EE calling! Wahoo! I put my antenna to his direction and replied to him and so.... ES party time to EA8 and CN.

-opening lasted very long time , I was listenig , but could'nt find other  stations . Guys in IN94 worked EA8 I could'nt hear. I don't know how was the MUF exactly EA8 were working JN25 and JN03 at the same time.
-Very good behaviour from the EA8 guys , well spreading on the band , calling CQ on 300 and telling they were listening on 280-260 , very good!
-At one time there was QRM on 300 , I think I heard in the QRM someone from IM23 , but not really sure about this.
