July 08. 2003 - Southwest again - twice | Comments/reports/log-sheets/audios to DK5YA

Another usual Es day in Europe. MUF was not that really high in the morning and early afternoon. At app. 1500 UT first BC-signals from EA into PA0 and DL and MUF was rising pretty fast again. At 15:24 very short and weak EA7 into DL but at 15.45 UT 144 was in a good shape for a nice opening. While EA and EA6 and CT was into DL, PA0, OK and SP, G made I and EA6 too. One QSO reported so far from DL (JN49) to EA8 and one from DL to CN8. Band closed at 16:45 UT until 17:55 UT when the second leg started. Again EA7 into DL while CT was into S5, HA, HB9 and DL. This one was very spotty and short, just like MS some said. 7X2LS was also QRV but ... again after the opening...
Involved DXCC: EI, G, GW, PA0, ON, F, DL, OZ, HB9, OE, HA, S5, I, EA, EA6, EA8, CN8, CT

Today we had a very short opening. So short many (including me) will question  if this was Es, or something else ... I start listening DF6NA at 1603z, with S3. I called him several times with no result. At 1605 the signal literally "jumped" to full scale! Amazing!

Nothing new so far cause nothing more to work in CT and EA :-). Heard mni EA and CT but didn't call not to increase QRM for the others.

After missing the short opening on monday, today I have worked some ES again. At 1745 I heard DF2ZC, very weak, unable to work him. Also heard at 16:03 LX1VS calling, also very weak. A little bit later I managed to complete some QSOs. This first opening was very short and many QSB, like a bunch of little openings, similar to MS big bursts.
One hour later another opening, this time with stronger signals. 17 completed QSO in 3 countries (DL, OK, F), in 9 different squares.
And for the end of a happy day, a super-tropo QSO with RW1ZM/MM in IL10nu, near the coast of Mauritania, 2036 Km away. You can hear the recording of the QSO here: http://www.qsl.net/ea1rx/sonidos/RW1ZM3.mp3

Today another "common" aperture (Who said this was "sporadic"?? :o) DF6NA was peaking full scale. Heard some other DL stations, but lot of QSB and low signals. Many stations on 300.

Another aperture at 18:00 UTC, heard HB9DFG in JN37sn (1208 Km, MUF=176 MHz!) and some DL stations again. Weak signals. None worked.

Tonight's opening was rather unstable, with short lasting openings,
rarely beyond 5 minutes. Some Spanish operators were very keen
on getting the locator correct to the last digit, forgetting in the
meantime to give a report :-(. This cost me 2 QSO's!
