May 16. - The first big one in 2004
50 MHz was again wide open from early morning all across Europe and Near East with MUF's up to 110 MHz mostly in the east. BC from OE, DL, OK and SP was heard early in the morning in UA, dropping at 09.00 UT but came back very fast at 1030 from 9A and S50 into UA3. First sigs on 144 from UA6 into SP at 10:41 UT and from 9A into UA3 at 10:50, MUF always around or just below 144 MHz. Suddenly at 11.20 RZ6BU was 59++ into OK and the show started. A good and long opening from UA6, UT5, UA3 and EW into SP, OK, OM, DL, OE, HA, S5, 9A, YU and LZ. Last sigs on 144 at 12:04 UT.

No QSO's made, only heard one station calling:
11:48 UT6EA 53 SWL KN78XM
Heard him for about 3min, with deep QSB...first time heard (but even weaker and only for less than 1min) at 11:35UTC with some OK stations.
I called several times, but didn't made it Would have been my first contact via Es on 2m.

Hi Udo, event was first nocited when I hrd a weak constant cw sig on 144300 qtf ~65 from Davor-9A6NDX JN65TF(well done Davor!!) at 14z. We had a few cw qso's then even SSB, qtf was between 60-75 deg here. Signals were fluttery.
After cqing a while S50C was worked twice to test qtf, peaking 559 at 55deg on the second qso.
I hrd a DL stn calling me a long time but thought it was a tropo sig, Guildo Dl8EBW said abt the station was calling so I worked them and was suprised that DL4YAO was in JN58, I was qtf60, he beamed qtf 330. The last qso was with s51zo at 1507z in JN86DR. He was 559 ~60deg. ZO qsyed to 315 and peaked 579 a little while later qtf 55.
I was still hearing s51zo up till ~1610z but very fluttery signal peaking ~539.
During my many cq calls I know I missed a number of stations, this is mainly due to a number of stns calling me on tropo and still g stns in the contest. I thought that cq fai would make sense hi, never mind.
Worth note also, some called me way too fast in cw, when signals are weak and fluttery these are impossible (for me anyway!) to read, sending 12wpm with wider spacing suits my ears well. The muf was over 100mhz centred around jo2/3/4 area which seems is the common refl area for this event. As the muf increased over western jo32 other G/GW were hearing weak signals but were also suffering qrm.
Anyway, great fun, hope for many more events this season.
So if over jo3/4 area you see a high muf and you live in se DL/9a/s5 etc then start testing! Of course there are mni good points for FAI, so high muf may not produce es but will produce these events if you don't mind digging out the keyer and having a try

Hi,
I worked UT5JAJ in KN64SM at 11:50 local Warsaw time. I noticed that nobody else seems to have reported working that station on your report, although other SP stations were also working him. My equipment: 20w to dipole! 73 de Richard

SP2IQW, JO94gm
The Es skip did not pass into JO94, KO03 areas. I have monitored and made few CQs near 144300 but only heard few pings from RN6BN and UR5GIM. It is rather strange because Es cloud should give a link to Black Sea area (maybe it passed just to the sea?).
Best regards and CU on 2m, 73!
PS: By the way, still there are some uncerainity in squares marked as worked (of course it is not so important!).
